East-Siberian State Institute of Culture (VSGIK)

The federal state budgetary educational institution of higher learning «East Siberian state institute of culture» founded in 1960 is

  • a recognized educational and innovative institution in the east of Russia in training highly qualified specialists for the sphere of culture and arts;
  • transboundary center in the field of research and creative activity with the countries of Asia-Pacific region.

ESSIC is a member of the International organization for preserving and developing authentic folk arts (IOV) (United Nations), member of the interregional alliance of museum experts of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, International Committee of museology/International council of museums (United Nations) ICOM-ICOFOM-ASPAC. In 2010 East Siberian state Institute of culture obtained the international certificate of the European quality organization.

The institute has a highly qualified teaching staff with a big potential and the ability to solve modern tasks in training specialists and doing scientific research and creative performing work according to its profile. Well-known scientists in the fields of regional History, Ethnology, Culturology, Social philosophy, Sociology, Linguistics, Art history work at the Institute as well as the People’s artists of the USSR and the Russian Federation, honored artists of the Russian Federation, honored workers of arts of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Buryatia, honored workers of culture of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Buryatia. About 196 teachers conduct training including 36 Doctors of Sciences, professors, 73 Ph.Ds, associate professors; 72 teachers have been honored titles of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Buryatia.

The institute comprises four faculties, 17 departments, center of extramural and additional education, center of foreign citizens’ training and testing, department in charge of teaching and methodology activities, department of post-graduate studies management, dissertation council, research laboratory of ethnography and folklore of the peoples of Eastern Siberia, department of international and regional relations, concert-theatrical center «Phoenix», media center, psychological center, ensemble of folk music and dance «Siberian souvenir», students’ theatres, concert orchestras, creative and training laboratories, center of students’ initiatives and academic mobility, center of employment and professional work, center of information technology, publishing department, scientific library, canteen, campus, recreational base «Oslik» on the shore of Lake Baikal.

The research and creative activity of the institute is an integral part of the educational process fulfilled by highly qualified staff being the source of additional fund-raising. The institute conducts research under the themes «Culture and art of Eastern Siberia», «Social-cultural and educational environment of a region as the factor of developing human potential». The institute encourages intellectual, social-economic, cultural and ethnic development of the region and Russia through the transfer of knowledge and its application in practice.

The institute has been fruitfully collaborating with scientific and educational organizations, institutions of culture of Poland, Kazakhstan, Kirgizia, Mongolia, China, South Korea and other countries for a long time. Under collaboration agreements different joint creative and scientific events are held, training of foreign citizens is conducted, students’ exchanges are made. There is a constant search for new partners and new forms of cooperation.

More than 30,000 institute graduates work in different regions of Russia and abroad.

About 2,000 students majoring in different fields get higher education at the institute, including 60 foreign citizens. The citizens from China, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia and the Commonwealth of Independent states are trained at the institute.

The number of students wishing to get higher education at our institution, particularly from the Asia-Pacific region, is increasing annually. Foreign citizens are trained at the bachelor’s, master’s and post-graduate courses. Such specializations as “Choreographic art”, “Musical-instrumental art”, “Fine arts”, “Folk art culture”, «Vocal art” are highly popular.

Historical Sciences and Archaeology

East Siberian State Institute of Culture offers the Russian language and preparatory training courses to foreign citizens. Documents required for enrolling in training programs:

  • a letter of application;
  • Certificate of education with appendix of grades and apostille (if necessary);
  • passport and visa copies.

Foreign applicants have the opportunity to apply for a quota (grant) for training from the Government of the Russian Federation. The information required is on the website: RUSSIA.STUDY (http://russia.study).

In the application you need to indicate that you want to study at East Siberian State Institute of Culture.

Competitive selection for free training within the quota is organized by the Rossotrudnichestvo offices all over the world. If there is no Rossotrudnichestvo office in the country of residence, competitive selection is organized by the Embassy (consulate) of the Russian Federation.

To clarify the time and forms of qualifying entrance tests and ask questions about the selection procedure, please, contact the Rossotrudnichestvo office or diplomatic office of the Russian Federation in the country of residence.

Those willing to study at East Siberian State Institute of Culture are required to email (vsgaki-omms@mail.ru.) an application form and a passport copy for getting an invitation before June 30. Passport must be valid for at least 18 months from the date of the study visa.

Foreign students are provided with a room in the hostel sharing it with 2 - 3 people. The hostel is located within walking distance of the Institute.

1. Document of secondary (complete) general education or vocational education with the appendix of grades with legalization / apostille and notarized translation into Russian.

3. The I level certificate of proficiency in Russian as a foreign language (TRFL). Or certificate of completion the preparatory department of East Siberian state institute of culture or of other Russian higher educational institution. The submission of the certificates is not required in the following cases: a) education is obtained in the Russian Federation; b) the applicant is a citizen of one of the CIS countries and has a record on the subject "The Russian language" in the high school certificate or in the vocational education diploma.
